  • One of the most obvious signs that your drain is blocked, is if the water in your sink, shower, toilet or bath is draining away slowly. This could indicate something is lodged in the pipe. Also, be on the lookout for unusual odours coming out from your plug-holes.

  • As a homeowner, you are responsible for drain blockages. However, you are only responsible for the drains inside their property boundary. Most of the drains that a water company must maintain are on public land, outside of the private property boundary.

    If you are a tenant, the landlord is usually responsible for the maintenance and repair of the exterior of your home, including your blocked drains.

  • Are you living in an apartment or communal building sharing water and drainage facilities? Commonly, there will be some form of a management company. They take responsibility for external building maintenance, including drainage facilities. This management or caretaker company usually pay for blocked drainage issues from your maintenance fees.

  • A few tips to help prevent blockages in your pipes. Use sink strainers made from metal, mesh or silicone. They act as sieves and can be placed over plugholes to protect your drains. Don't pour oil or grease down your drains. Oil and grease are both enemies of your drains. And be careful what you flush down the toilet, keep it to toilet tissue only.
